※- Chinese homecoming snow chaos
- Jan. 30 -
Nearly half a million passengers homeward-bound for the Lunar New Year are stranded at a rail station as blizzard conditions bring chaos to the country's transport network..
The crisis has come as many Chinese migrant workers are preparing to return home for the Chinese New Year period, which even in normal conditions puts enormous strain on the transport system.
The Guangzhou railway station in Guangdong Province has seen the most severe disruption -- at its peak, nearly 1 million passengers were stranded.

- Jan. 30 -
Japanese police say that a banned agricultural chemical has been found in frozen dumplings imported from China that have made 10 people sick in Japan since late last month.
Police said on Wednesday that 5 members of a family were hospitalized for symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea after eating Chinese-made dumplings on January 22.
They said that a 5-year-old girl was in a critical condition for a while. The dumplings were purchased at a cooperative store in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo.
Police also said that 3 people were hospitalized after eating dumplings imported from China in Takasago City, Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, on January 5 and 2 others complained of similar symptoms in Chiba City on December 28. They are all reportedly recovering.
Police said that in the dumplings, they have detected methamidophos, a toxic organic phosphorus used in insecticides, and have warned consumers not to eat the products.
The dumplings were made by Tianyang Food Plant in the northern Chinese province of Hebei, imported by Tokyo-based J-T Foods and sold through co-ops and other stores in packs of 20 or 40 pieces.
The importer says it will recall all 23 products made by the Chinese firm. The Health Ministry has told local governments around the country to order importers to stop selling the products and instructed quarantine offices to prevent their entry.

- Jan. 29 -
At least 49 people have died as snow and ice sweep across much of China, affecting the annual New Year holiday.

※- Annan starts talks Kenya as bleeds
- Jan. 29 -
Former U.N. chief Kofi Annan has launched mediation efforts to end the crisis in Kenya, where the killing of an opposition legislator stoked bloody protests.
About a dozen people have been killed in the latest outbreak of violence.
It brings the death toll to more than 850 since President Mwai Kibaki's disputed Dec. 27 election triggered turmoil that has taken on an ethnic momentum of its own.
Annan, bringing together Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga, said he hoped the immediate political issues could be resolved within four weeks.

※- Gazans stream into Egypt
-Jan. 23 - Thousands of Palestinians flood into Egypt to stock up on life's essentials after militants destroyed parts of a border wall.
Egyptian border guards didn't intervene. Palestinian police from Gaza's ruling Hamas group also stood by - watching the surge but doing nothing to stop it.
It comes after days of protests by Gaza Palestinians angered by Israel's blockade of the impoverished territory since Friday.
Residents in Rafah say members of Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committees were among the gunmen who blew up the wall.
Hamas officials deny involvement - but say it was impossible to prevent.

- Jan. 22 -
After years of bright growth, the sharp downturn in global markets has cast a dark shadow over the World Economic Forum in Davos.
But the founder of the annual gathering of money and power in the Swiss resort remains sanguine about the longer-term prospects.
Others are not so sure.

※- Kenya is Unstable after election
- Jan. 22 -
Kenyan police use tear gas on supporters of President Mwai Kibaki as they demonstrate for the first time since the election.
Police wanted to disperse Kibaki supporters before the visit of former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan who will mediate in the stand-off over Kenya's election that has caused weeks of unrest.
Several hours before Annan was due to arrive in Kenya, riot police scattered about 100 pro-government supporters in Nairobi's central business district.

※- The Great Commandment
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together, and one of them, a teacher of the Law, tried to trap him with a question. "Teacher," he asked, "which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is a greatest and the most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like it:’ Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments." *-*
